3 Foods That Can Wreck Your Mood

Not always is your mood determined by your stress level. The types of foods we eat can also alter our mood for better or for worse. I recently read an article, written by Lee Zerbe on types of foods that not only are bad for you health/weight loss, but also bad for you quality of life. As a fitness trainer I believe it’s my job to inform our South Windsor and Glastonbury bootcamp clients about certain topics that can help improve your life. Below are 3 foods that are commonly consumed in every house hold and an alternative given from me to keep you on track to you fitness goals.

·         Soda – Full of sugar, syrup, fake sugar and did I mention sugar? If you’re trying to lose weight or not gain any than stay away from foods high in sugar. But besides that these drinks turn to fat inside our bodies, sending our moods plummeting after the initial sugar rush. All you want to do is lay down, and a tired you is an unmotivated you.

Try this instead – water with lemon, green tea, herbal tea.

·         Potato Chips – Loaded with fats from oils as well as bad carbohydrates. Empty calories from these means you can eat a lot of them putting on the calories and they aren’t sufficiently burned easily. One interesting fact I didn’t know is the chips are fried up in oils laden with omega-6 fatty acids that block out mood-enhancing, brain-building omega-3 fatty acids.

Try this instead – microwaveable non-butter popcorn

·         Peanuts – This one took me a little by surprise.  I know peanuts are the highest calorie nut with the most fat. They are good fats but too much of anything is never good. The packaged, salted peanuts commonly served at holiday parties are high in sodium and questionable food additives, including monosodium glutamate (MSG), an artificial flavoring linked to migraines, weakness, burning sensations, wheezing, and difficulty breathing in some people. I did not know that about peanuts, that’s why it’s important to read labels.

Try this instead – unsalted almonds, unsalted cashews

Unpackaged, micro processed foods are the best options out there. Look for these options before thinking about anything else. Here at M.E.L.T. After our clients log their food, we review it with them to show them where they can make healthy changes.
