Glastonbury Personal Trainer Shares 4 Tips On Choosing the Best Sports Bra

I have had a ton of questions come at me about sports bras. What is the best kind? What do I need to look for? Where can I find a good one?  Luckily, I was the running bra expert at a local specialty running store in West Hartford, so the questions came to the right place! Here is what I believe are the most important aspects when trying to find the proper equipment to support the “girls”......

1.Measure Up!!

So many women are wearing something that is not true to their actual size. Don’t be shy, go and get a good measurement to find out your true band and cup size. Trust me, once you are in the proper size, getting a comfy and supportive sports bra will make your workouts that much better. Most people are unaware the band is actually where you get the support from, not the straps. You aren’t going to work out in shoes that are not comfortable, so why would you workout in a bra that is not?

2. Wire vs. No Wire

There are several companies that offer a variety of sports bras. If you are in a small A-B cup size, an over the head compression bra should be supportive enough. However, when you venture into the high B, C and D sizes, you may want to think about a sports bra that has molded cups and possibly clasps in the back.  My favorite of this type of running bra is made by a company called Moving Comfort. The Fiona, is a sports/running bra that clasps in the back, has velcro adjustable straps, and no underwire. It is super supportive and comfortable, with breathable synthetic fabric that wicks away moisture. Champion also makes some really good running/sports bras that are good for a variety of sizes.


3. If you are planning on working hard, avoided that natural fibers

Cotton, however soft and breathable, will absorb sweat, leaving you feeling extra hot and extra uncomfortable (can cause chaffing). Choose fabrics that do not contain cotton when buying any type of athletic gear (this includes socks too). The best synthetic fibers that are breathable and moisture wicking are polyester or spandex. You will see labels like “Duo Dry” or “Cool Max”, that signify their wick away technology.

4. Jump Around

The best way to test if a sports bra is going to be supportive enough for your activity is to test it out. Do some jacks, run in place, and hop around while in the dressing room. There should be little to no movement going on if you are being supported properly. If you are in a larger cup size, you may experience a small bit of movement, however, this movement should not continue well after you have stopped! Let’s face it, it neither looks nor feels comfortable when “the girls” are not staying in place. It is also harmful to the breast tissue, causing micro-tears if there is too much bounce.

Following these steps will help you find what kind of sports bra is going to work best for you. Remember, you have to test it out to see if it works. My suggestion is to check out stores like Fleet Feet Sports in West Hartford, or any Dicks sporting goods. You get what you pay for, and in this case, you want to make sure you are getting quality that will keep you and your “ladies” happy.

Hey Guys,

I interviewed Alicia Roncari, the owner of Bin 228 in Hartford, and had the pleasure of dining at her restaruant. Bin 228 is a great place to experience great wine and delicious food. Here's how the interview went...

1. Who is you company and what is it that you do? bin228 is a panini and wine bar that opened in 2003. We offer small plates, including cheese plates, fondue, beef carpaccio, as well as an award winning wine list.

2. What is something unique about your company? We offer wine from the part of Italy I am from and pair your wine with the food you order

3. Are there any specials or promotions that you are running? We offer 50% of wine bottles on Monday nights and happy hour 4-6 Monday-Friday with 2.00 apps and 2.00 drafts and 5.00 select wines and martinis.

M.E.L.T. Fitness Studio Blog: Who Wants Some Chocolate Pudding??

Hey Everyone,


Want some chocolate, actually want some chocolate pudding? Of course who doesnt right?


I know,  I know, Craig you can't be serious right? I mean chocolate pudding how dare you tease us like that!


No tease, kind of.


Thanks to a friend of mine, I have an awesome recipe that should take care of that sweet tooth! Check it out below and give it a try. I know at first glance it may seem a little weird but trust me, I tried it and before i knew what it was I thought it was chocolate pudding.


Now you might have to play around with the ingredients to get it how you like and of course, everything in moderation, but this is a great alternative to the chocolate pudding we are all use to!


Avocado Mousse


2 avocados
1/2 cup maple syrup
2-4 T. additional sweetener to taste (optional)
2 T. coconut oil (optional)
1-2 t. vanilla
1t. balsamic vinager
1/2 t. soy sauce
1cup cocoa powder
Blend all in a food processor or blender.
Eat!  or Refrigerate
Add raspberries on top and/or mint, or cream, or be creative!

Do you REALLY know what your buying?

Hey M.E.L.T.er's,

Do you really know what your buying at the grocery store?

Oraganic or "Healthy" food more often than not arent really that healthy for you!

Before buying, look at the label and see what ingredients are actually in that so called health food. Most of the time these type of food are marketed very well to make you believe what you are buying is healthy for you when in reality it may not be the best choice. Just because something might have whole grain or organic on it does not mean the rest of the item isnt covered in sugar or other "not so healthy" ingredients.

So, here at M.E.L.T., we have a simple solution!

We are going to be offering a FREE grocery store tour in South Windsor on 7/10 at 7 pm at Stop & Shop, Glastonbury 7/12 at 7:30pm Stop &Shop and 7/16 Harwington right after BC.

The purpose is going to be how to shop smart. We are going to teach you how companys market themselves to come off as healthy. We are also going to show you how to read labels and show what to look for and what to not look for.

This is going to be very informational and if anyone is having trouble with their diet or just wants to learn the rights and wrongs of eating then please join us!
